I’m experiencing a highly annoying PHP sessions bug (PHP bug 32330). By simply trying to start a session with session_start(), at seemingly random times I get a session_start(): Failed to initialize storage module: error. The PHP bug 32897, is actually more accurate in my case, but that one’s been closed as a duplicate. The bug… Continue reading Highly annoying PHP Session bug
Another piece of paper
It won’t surprise anybody who knows me that I’ve finally signed up to do a nutrition course. So, in about 500 hours I should be a qualified clinical nutritionist 🙂 But more important than the meaningless piece of paper (at least to me – others may be impressed:) ) is the motivation it gives me… Continue reading Another piece of paper
Bye bye sugar water
In a few years, people will look back at the era of drinking Coke in the same way as people look back at drilling holes through the head to cure headaches. The stuff is addictive end extremely harmful, especially to kids. Of course it tastes sweet, which is the attraction, and contains caffeine, which is… Continue reading Bye bye sugar water
The Vegetable Passion
I recently finished a book called The Vegetable Passion, or, The Passionate Vegetable as I keep calling it in my head, bringing to mind all sort of activities with cucumbers etc. It’s a fairly old book, first published in 1975, and is a meandering discussion of various famous vegetarians, as well as vegetarian movements. Of… Continue reading The Vegetable Passion
Trying to make a payment in Paypal
After the excitement of seeing that South Africans have the privilege of paying money through Paypal, but not receiving money (and who says global capitalism is not one big sucking sound from the have nots to the haves), I’ve recently actually tried to use it. I’ve tried a few times, at different times of the… Continue reading Trying to make a payment in Paypal
Broadband Boom in SA
I read some stats today that indicated Telkom have doubled their ADSL user base from 50 000 in Feb 2005, to 100 000 now, with a 20 000 waiting list. With both Vodacom and Telkom offering ‘free’ computers and broadband access for an affordable monthly fee (I purposely avoid the term ‘reasonable’), it looks like… Continue reading Broadband Boom in SA
Were Bush and Blair responsible: Part 2
I wrote part 1 a while back, but it started getting a bit long. The whole topic of truth and knowledge and conspiracies can fill many books worth. Again, for brevity I’ll call the theory that explosives were used to demolish the buildings X. So, onto some actual research. Could the official story support what… Continue reading Were Bush and Blair responsible: Part 2
Were Bush and Blair responsible: Part 1
I met a friend the day after the recent series of bombs in London. He is convinced that Bush and the Americans were responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Centre in September, 2001, and that ‘Bush and Blair’ were responsible for the London bombs. In other words, a conspiracy theorist. I find it… Continue reading Were Bush and Blair responsible: Part 1
Politics in the Western Cape
I don’t usually write about politics, but I’ve been a poitical junkie since the days of the white’s only elections, avidly following the swings between the HNP and CP, or Dennis Worral’s breakaway party and the PFP. Sadly it’s the state of Western Cape politics that’s drawn me to write, and the lack of any… Continue reading Politics in the Western Cape
Paypal in South Africa
I missed the earlier announcements, if there were any, but I’m glad to hear that Paypal is finally available (partially) for South Africans. We can now open accounts and make payments via Paypal, but not accept payments. One friend has already been buying up a storm on eBay.
