A potentially exciting development slipped through my radar in late November – the launch of Wikinews. Just as Wikipedia allows anyone to contribute to encyclopedia articles, so Wikinews does the same with news content. With the commercial media so often reduced to regurgitating corporate and government press releases, Wikinews may be another counter to this trend. Blogs are already doing that effectively, but Wikinews brings a degree of organisation unavailable to disparate blogs. Wikipedia’s success is based upon this organisation – everything is available on the Internet, but it’s hard work to find it. Wikipedia is one of the most popular sites today because it’s easy to find high quality information. Perhaps Wikinews will soon be as successful, if not more so, considering that I suspect people read more news than encyclopedias.
