Cape Town has been bone dry recently. I have about as waterwise a garden as you can get, the back garden being a fynbos-covered hill. However, with last year’s dry winter, and the hot summer, even established plants have been dying (if I could find the cable for my digital camera I’d show you lots of exciting pictures of dead plants at this point).
Today saw a storm of note. It’s been strangely misty the last few days, unusual Cape weather, and this afternoon the storm broke. Massive thunder and lightning, torrential rain, howling winds. A wonderful evening for being out on Signal Hill. We were on the way to see 34 South, a local film of still-to-be-determined quality, but for a photographer friend the call of the lightning was too strong. Instead I got blasted by hurricane-force pine cones, practised tai chi rooting to avoid being blown off the observation deck, and saw some spectacular lighting, and wonderful silhouettes of Lion’s Head. Not to mention some choice red wine and chocolate. Hopefully Craig will be kind enough to send me some shots, so I can finally add some colour to this blog.
