Ethiopia is a country which for many is synonymous with drought, and preceded by the word starving.
This is a tragedy, as Ethiopia has such a rich cultural heritage, and, surprisingly to many, is remarkably lush. Unfortunately, its government has proved its greatest obstacle in recent times, and is largely to blame for the devastating famines.
Things aren’t getting any better, and now it’s in a race with neighbouring Eritrea for the dubious honour of Africa’s worst rated country as far as press freedom goes. The government has begun to block access to numerous websites it deems critical.
Fortunately, there’s a lot that can be done to allow Ethipians to both access blocked sites, and to continue to post. Ethan Zuckerman gives a rundown of what can be done.
