OK, well not quite – apparently the figure is closer to 23 000. But that phenomonen that so many tried to copy, the Million Dollar homepage, is back in the news again.
Alex Tew, who came up with the idea, promised his advertisers that their ads would remain visible for up for 5 years. A bunch of extortionists decided to get in on the act, and threaten to take down the site if they were not paid $50 000. Tew refused, and they struck, with the help of their zombie machines, taking the site offline for 6 days. However, putting his entrepreneurial instincts to play again, he struck a deal with a security company (DDoS-prevention technology ProxyShield® provided by Gigeservers and DDoSprotection.com) and the site is back online again (and the publicity of course must be great for the advertisers).
