In the midst of my frenzy, I did manage to attend the Cape Town Book fair. It was a while ago, so this is hardly a topical post, but I’ve just been prompted to write something by an Exclusive Books survey.
The fair was fantastic – it exceeded all my expectations. I went in shortly before an appointment, expecting to whizz around for an hour or so, but it would have required far longer than that to do it justice. There were some great offers, and of course I left with a good few years more reading to do (at least at my current rate).
I was also interested by the number of technology stands at the fair. As a trade fair, many of the stands were aimed at publishers, and there were all sorts of applications offering the enticements of digitial print. I was most interested by the presence of the Open Society Initiative. Their stand seemed to be highly popular. It was pleasing to see ideas around Knowledge Commons making such a prominent appearance at the fair, the fusion of ideas from two of my most greatest passions, technology and literature.
